Racetrack accident injures three jockeys, results in two horse deaths

Three jockeys were hospitalized and two thoroughbreds euthanized following an accident during the sixth race at Florida’s Tampa Bay Downs racecourse on Saturday.
Six-year-old Wild Kiss, who was ridden by Keiber Coa, broke down while leading the 12-horse field. Four-year-old Iron Media, ridden by Silvia Zapico, was unable to avoid Wild Kiss and took a tumble as well.
Tampa Bay Downs reported that both horses had to be euthanized. A third horse, four-year-old Traffic Telling, ridden by Ricardo Mejias, went down as a result of the accident as well, but did not appear injured.
Coa, Zapico and Mejias were taken to St Joseph’s Hospital Trauma Center with various injuries.
The racetrack reported that Coa had a broken collarbone, Zapico a broken leg, and Mejias an injured wrist.
The accident occurred in a claiming race.
