A horse grazing in its 11-acre Pennsylvania pasture was struck and killed by a pickup truck which sheered off a power pole, crashed through the fence and careened 100 yards across the field.
The horse, a 16-year-old black and white Tennessee Walker named Sierra, died only minutes after being struck.
The accident happened on Tuesday evening, off Route 488 in Butler County. The 56-year-old driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police are reported to have taken samples to determine if the driver was intoxicated at the time.
Local media report that Sierra was owned by Kenny Albert. The mare had been a part of his family for four years, with family members said to be devastated by the loss.
State Police Trooper Jason Frances told the Butler Eagle that the pickup truck involved in the accident ended up about 100 yards into the pasture.
